Benefits of CyberKnife over other stereotactic Radiosurgery systems

Other stereotactic Radiosurgery systems

CyberKnife
RadioSurgery

Some forms of radiosurgery require rigid head-frames that are screwed into the patient's skull to minimize any movement.

The CyberKnife System does not require such extreme procedures to keep patients in place, and instead relies on sophisticated tracking software, allowing for a much more comfortable and non-invasive treatment.
Some radiosurgery systems, which can only treat tumors in the head

Has unlimited reach to treat a broad range of tumors throughout the body, including the prostate, lung, brain, spine, liver, pancreas, and kidney.
Locate tumors within the body with the use of an invasive stereotactic headframe which is inconvenient and traumatic for patients

The CyberKnife system is able to locate tumors within the body without the use of an invasive stereotactic headframe used with other systems. This is much more convenient and less traumatic for patients.

Stereotactic radiosurgery delivers highly focused beams from many directions so that the normal tissues experience less radiation and the treatment can be completed in one to three sessions.

The CyberKnife System can essentially "paint" the tumor with radiation allowing it to precisely deliver treatment to the tumor alone, sparing surrounding healthy tissue.

What can the CyberKnife treat?

** PLEASE DESCRIBE THIS IMAGE **

The CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System is a non-invasive alternative to surgery for the treatment of both cancerous and non-cancerous tumors anywhere in the body, including the prostate, lung, brain, spine, liver, pancreas and kidney. The treatment - which delivers high doses of radiation to tumors with extreme accuracy - offers new hope to patients who have inoperable or surgically complex tumors, or who may be looking for a non-surgical option.

To date, more than 100,000 patients have been treated and more than 150 systems are installed worldwide.

Are CyberKnife treatments covered by private insurance companies and Medicare?

While Accuray cannot guarantee reimbursement from any third-party payer, data collected from US-based CyberKnife centers indicate that Medicare covers the CyberKnife treatment, and over 100 unique commercial, private payers are reimbursing the related codes, and any or all portions of CyberKnife services. Patients should always consult with a physician in connection with any and all treatment options, and if required, obtain prior authorization from their insurance companies once a treatment option is determined.
** PLEASE DESCRIBE THIS IMAGE **

What is the treatment course?

** PLEASE DESCRIBE THIS IMAGE **CyberKnife treatment is performed on an outpatient basis. The patient receives an initial consultation with the radiation oncologist and surgeon. A CT scan (3-D X-ray) is obtained. The 3-D image obtained is used by the physicians, physicists and team to create a treatment plan.

The patient will return for the one-hour treatment within a few days after the consultation.

The number of treatments will vary depending on tumor size, location and shape, but ** PLEASE DESCRIBE THIS IMAGE **the number of treatments is usually between one and four.
